        Golf Course Overview

Sitting on the tribal lands of the Santa Clara Pueblo, the Black Mesa Golf Club has received numerous accolades from a host of golf publications and organizations. Surrounded by a rich, natural landscape absent of man-made distractions, the course winds through dramatic sandstone ridges over a layout that tests both the mind and the body. According to Golf Digest, Black Mesa Golf Club “could very well turn out to be the finest course, public or private, in the state.”

Designed by noted golf course architect Baxter Spann, the 18-hole course has a wild, Irish links appearance, particularly after a wet winter season. The course, which showcases distinctive bunkering and native arroyos, was designed to be fun and challenging in both calm and windy conditions. “More than any other project, I eagerly anticipated every trip I made to this course, always knowing I would find something new to experience,” said Spann. “I hope that golfers will feel the same way about Black Mesa.” From the first tee shot, mental strategy is essential, while the expansive fairways and greens allow it to be played more easily than it appears.

The elevation for Black Mesa is 5,400 feet, offering an elevation change of 125 feet with 12 of the holes also playing slightly downhill. The par 72 course measures 7,307 yards from the back tees, with a USGA slope of 141 and a USGA rating of 73.9. Four sets of tees are also available for players of varying abilities. The course measures 2,921 yards from the front tees, with a USGA slope of 125 and a USGA rating of 66.9.

Black Mesa also offers its guests a short game practice facility, presenting golfers with all of the challenges they will meet on the course itself. There is also a spacious, 60,000 sq. ft. teeing area with seven target greens. A superb teaching facility is located near the practice facility, headed by golf pro Tom Velarde. The teaching staff is fully qualified to improve every aspect of their guests' game and junior camps are available offering young players high-level instruction.
