COACHELLA, CA – The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians and its Chairman Darrell Mike have joined a wave of fans across the U.S. in donating to the Toby Keith Foundation. The $1,029 amount was given in memory of the late country music star, who lost his battle with stomach cancer earlier this month at age 62.
In May 2021 during the height of the Covid pandemic, Keith agreed to headline the inaugural concert for the tribe’s new outdoor venue Coachella Crossroads, drawing close to 10,000 fans. The concert also marked Keith’s first show since the pandemic began more than a year prior, saying to the live audience in attendance, “Eighteen months was long enough for me!”
“Toby was a friend to me, the tribe, and beloved throughout the community,” said Chairman Darrell Mike. “He was an artist of enormous talent and generosity who brought people together at the tribe’s Coachella Crossroads Multiplex Event Center and brought joy to everyone he touched with his music and his personality. We are all grateful for his time on this earth and know that his spirit will continue through the work of the Toby Keith Foundation.”
