BAYFIELD, WI – The Giiwedin (North Wind) Community Housing Project is set to move forward with site clearing this fall, followed by construction beginning this coming spring 2025. The project consists of two apartment buildings – each with eight units featuring one- and two-bedroom apartments available for Red Cliff tribal members. The apartment buildings are expected to be completed in March of 2026.
“We are thrilled to be moving forward with construction of Giiwedin Housing,” said Chairwoman Nicole Boyd. “The tribal council continues to prioritize increasing housing options for our community, and we are determined to provide our members a legitimate chance of returning to live in their homelands.”
Black Wolf Construction, a local Native-owned business operated by co-owners Hans Dahl and Alexander Butterfield, has been selected to lead the Giiwedin Housing construction process.
“Having completed multiple projects to serve the community over the years, it’s another great honor to be working on the Giiwedin Community Housing Project in Red Cliff,” said Dahl. “Perhaps it’s the memories of our own childhoods and housing struggles, [along with] working in our own backyard and community, with our local team members and workers, that bring us great pride and honor in being selected to provide future housing for our neighbors.”
The tribal council allocated funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for this housing development. The Giiwedin Community Housing Project joins several other ongoing housing initiatives, including a new elderly housing complex with 12 apartment-style units and the cleanup of several residential lease sites.
